Tulane University, officially called The Tulane University of Louisiana, more often referred to as simply TU, is a private, nonsectarian research university located in New Orleans, which is the largest city and the metropolitan area in the US state of Louisiana, with a population estimated at a number of more than 223 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census.
TU was founded in 1834, as a public medical college, becoming a comprehensive university in 1847, and being privatized in 1884, under the endowments of Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb. Its main campus is located in Uptown New Orleans, on St. Charles Avenue, extending north to South Claiborne Avenue, through Freret and Willow Street, occupying more than 110 acres of land.
Tulane University is academically organized into 10 schools, which are centered on sciences, liberal arts and specialized professions, offering its students various educational programs in an extensive range of fields of study. The Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine is one of the oldest public health schools in the States, and according to the US News & World Report, it is 13th among public health programs.
In 1958, Tulane was elected to the Association of American Universities, also being designated as a research university with ‘’very high research activity’’, by the Carnegie Foundation. TU reached the highest level of research funding in its history, in 2007, exceeding $157.5 million, its funding being ranked 79th by the National Institutes of Health. In 2008, the Ford Foundation ranked Tulane as the major international studies research institution in the South and one of the top 15 nationally.
